AIRPORT OF THE YEAR 2004

After just over 10 months of passenger voting, the Skytrax Airport of the Year survey logged a total of 4.8 million eligible entries. An increase of over 3 million respondents from our 2003 survey, the scale of global coverage was larger than previous years, and more than 86 different nationalities participated.

Throughout the period of operation, survey input monitoring was maintained at a consistent level. Being the biggest survey of it's type is not a guarantee to success on it's own, and strict monitoring of all input received via online questionnaires was applied at all stages.

Commenting on the Survey results, Peter Miller - Director Marketing of Skytrax - said .....

"the Airport of the Year title seems to have Hong Kong's name firmly engraved at the moment, with HKIA winning this global Award for the 4th consecutive year! It is a remarkable achievement that in a major Survey of this scale, HKIA has managed to lead the way in terms of passenger popularity. The airport experience is accepted as being one of the most stressful elements of today's air travel experience, but clearly HKIA has the infrastructure and amenities to ease the burden for passengers - so important to restoring an element of enjoyment to flying".

"As a relatively new airport, HKIA was particularly praised for the terminal ambience and relative ease of movement - great views, natural lighting and good downtown connections. Whilst the added security features that all airports have to apply has led to increased waiting times at peak periods, we find that passengers are willing to accept this level of added inconvenience, and this was an area where HKIA appeared to score well."

"This accolade for HKIA was not without challenge - Singapore Changi being ahead in the survey for part of the project period - and the final vote differential between these two airports again amongst the closest result we have seen. As Changi progresses the development of Terminal 3, the challenge to HKIA looks set to heighten!"

"Amsterdam Schiphol returned to the top 5 this year, after slipping down in 2003, and is clearly established as Europe's favourite large airport - there are many who prefer the more peaceful, small regional airports, but for those long haul trips, Schiphol is certainly the top choice. Whilst connecting between flights can require marathon distance walks, the remainder of Schiphol facilities offer a good level of variety and facility".

"Seoul Incheon is another entrant to the top 5 in 2004, and this is one of those airports that would perform even better, if more passengers knew about it and experienced travelling through Incheon. Spotlessly clean, efficient security and immigration procedures, and a great range of airside facilities make this an airport that more and more passengers choose to transit through".

"It is always going to be difficult for somewhat older airports to compete with the new design and technology that benefit the new-builds - and whilst waiting around the terminal building, many passengers like to look outside, enjoy the view and maximum daylight. Tax free shopping is another popular pastime, although passengers are more price-savvy and realise airports often have prices considerably higher than can be found downtown. Dining facilities are another essential, and can be a highly criticised (or praised) aspect of the airport facilities - dependent on the level of thought that has been put into choice factors by an airport operator, and their willingness to apply a fair-pricing policy".

"On the downside, customers do not take kindly to arriving into airports where immigration processing is clearly inadequate - and in the case of some US airports downright rude and unwelcoming. There are still many airports where one is confronted by a 1-2 hour immigration queue, but what is most galling is to find that less than 40 per cent of the available immigration counters are manned!".

"Looking ahead, the airport experience is going to comprise a growing percentage of the air travel experience, and whilst passenger security and safety is the primary importance, one hopes that the ordinary passenger is not neglected. As airlines jostle to offer the biggest and most luxurious lounges for their premium customers, it is economy class passengers who should also be entitled to find a quiet, comfortable corner of the terminal building in which to relax - not be confronted with overcrowded departure halls, lack of seating, dirty toilets etc".
