Thema: Luftfahrt in Indien

NEW DELHI: With its 43-aircraft purchase proposal still awaiting the government go-ahead for take-off, the state-owned Indian Airlines is cruising towards the leasing market to enhance its fleet and take on increasing competition in domestic and international skies.

The airline has invited global tenders to take 10 Airbus A320 aircraft on drylease with deliveries between October 2005 and March 2006.

These aircraft will be deployed on IA’s domestic, southeast Asia and Gulf routes, the government sources told The Times of India.

IA is now facing increased competition from new lowcost start-ups in the domestic market while Jet Airways and Air Sahara are preparing to enhance their presence in the southeast Asian skies this winter and threatening to eat into the PSU airline’s marketshare. Its $2-billion proposal is still awaiting the crucial CCEA clearance before the airline can start placing orders.

With the acquisition proposal still hanging fire, the airline has decided to take these aircraft on lease for up to five years.

IA has decided to lease only those A320 planes which are powered by V2500 A1 or CFM56-5B engines.

It has fixed June 15 as the last date for receiving bids from interested parties. IA also plans to sub-lease some of these aircraft to its wholly-owned arm Alliance Air. “The airline has decided to take only less than 15 year old aircraft which will be in two-class configuration seating — 20 Business Class and 126 Economy class.

Given the rising levels of service standards in the domestic skies, IA has also sought in-flight entertainment systems in the aircraft. Low cost airlines — Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines — have raised the service bar in the domestic skies with the introduction of personal television screens, on-air radio and even freebies for the Economy Class passenger.

The entry of Kingfisher and SpiceJet have already taken discount air fares to a new low. One-way domestic air tickets are now available — under discount and inaugural schemes — for as low as Rs 99.

In keeping with its plans to expand its network, IA plans to recruit 167 pilots. The airline has sought an A-320 endorsement or a jet endorsement with 500 hours of airline jet experience as the technical qualification to apply for the ‘senior trainee pilot’ post.

India, Germany agree to increase air connectivity

New Delhi , May 25

FLIGHTS between India and Germany are set to more than double in a phased manner in the near future with the two countries agreeing on Wednesday to allow their designated carriers up to 50 flights a week either way. These airlines have also been allowed to fly onwards to a third country.

Moreover, airlines from Germany have been allowed to operate to Kochi, Hyderabad and Goa, while specified airlines from India will be allowed to operate to three more cities in Germany. India is, however, yet to specify the three German cities to which its airlines would like to start flying.

This was agreed to at the conclusion of bilateral air services talks between India and Germany here. At present, while Air India operates 14 flights a week to Frankfurt, the German airline Lufthansa operates 32 flights a week to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai from Frankfurt and Munich.

The latest air services agreement allows the airlines to increase the frequency of flights to 42 a week in each direction from the forthcoming winter schedule, which starts from end October. The number of flights operated by the designated airlines of the two countries can reach 50 flights a week in each direction from the summer schedule of next year which will start from the end of March next year.

The agreement allows designated airlines of Germany to operate a maximum of 20 flights a week to and through Delhi in a phased manner ending winter 2006-07. In addition, the designated German airlines will be allowed to operate a daily flight to other designated destinations in India.

Besides, the permission given to Lufthansa to operate five additional flights — two to Bangalore and three to Hyderabad — on a provisional basis till May 31 has been extended till the end of October. The agreement should prove a boon for AI, which is keen to increase the number of flights that it operates from India to the US through Germany. The private sector airlines from India as also Indian Airlines could also benefit from the agreement.

Air Sahara on prowl for strategic investorConstant cost pressures, soaring fuel prices, plummeting airfares and pilot churn have affected the margins of Air Sahara in the airline industry. A strategic investor could make all the difference.

Air Sahara is believed to be looking around for a strategic investor, reports CNBC-TV18. According to industry sources, the need for a strategic partner could be due to cut-throat competition in the airline industry, that is forcing Air Sahara to invest more to expand its fleet and gain market share.

The group could also be considering raising money from the stock market through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). CEO, Sahara Airlines, Rono Datta said that there has been a considerable interest in the Indian aviation industry recently.

"Many international and domestic investors have shown interest in Air Sahara but we have no specific plans of getting a strategic partner at the moment," said Datta.

Air Sahara has a fleet sizeof about 20 aircrafts, which are mostly Boeing 737-700, 737-800, 737-400 and seven regional jets. The 12-year old airline has a 16% market share and operates 120 flights per day.

Industry players believe that the last few months have been rather tough for the airline due to cost pressures, soaring fuel prices, plummeting airfares and pilot churn. All this has affected the margins.

However, Datta said the airline is still to decide whether they need a strategic investor or not.

"Many international and domestic investors have shown interest in Air Sahara, but we have no specific plans of getting a strategic partner at the moment," he said.

Jet Airways of India is in final talks concerning an order for up to 15 long-haul aircraft to replace and supplement three A340s leased from South African Airways and four new A330s that will be leased from ILFC beginning next April. Jet is evaluating aircraft such as the A340-600 and 777-300ER and availability of delivery positions in 2007 is a key criterion, CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer told ATWOnline in Tokyo at the IATA AGM. "Our priority is to expand our long-haul operation," he said. Jet will increase its daily London flight to thrice-daily as soon as possible; "We just bought two more slots at London Heathrow, one from United," Prock-Schauer revealed. The airline also plans to add cities such as Manchester or Birmingham and swap widebodies for the 737s currently being operated on some Asia routes, such as to Singapore. Prock-Schauer prefers to open new routes to China instead of Japan, along with routes to Africa such as Durban and Nairobi. Services to France and Germany are desired as well. But the next step, he said, is to launch nonstop flights to New York as soon as possible. "We start with six weekly flights via Brussels to New York on June 23. We have not decided if we will go to JFK or Newark," but Jet will codeshare on the flights with Continental Airlines, which has a hub at Newark. He would not confirm reports that Jet will lease two A340-500s from Emirates, but sources close to both carriers confirmed to this website that Jet is in talks about the deal and aircraft should be available for the coming winter.

NRI plans low cost airline

June 02, 2005 20:04 IST

A Dubai-based NRI businessman is planning to start a new airline in India.

Aniyan Kutty, managing director of Dubai-based Clarion Shipping Services, said initially the airline will connect smaller cities, followed by operations all over India.

Dubai-based Clarion Shipping Services has interests in IT, construction and advertising, among others. The group has investments in the IT sector in several Indian cities including Mumbai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.

He said that a private company had already been registered in Kerala for running the airline. To be called City Air, the new airline will be a budget carrier and will have its operational headquarters in Chennai.

Kutty said he was working out the leasing option. "We have already had negotiations in the US for leasing aircraft. In the beginning, we will have two Boeing 737-200 aircraft," Kutty said adding the company intended to complete all formalities and have the launch of the airline before the end of this year.

As per an article in Economics Times, Sahara in alliance with UA, has been granted permission by Govt. of India to start Delhi-Chicago in winter of 2005.
This may be old news, but there seems to be real progress in terms of having approvals in place. Delhi residents have one more option to connect one-stop to LAX/SFO/IAH/IAD and many other cities.

The article also mentions fares of Rs 35,000(about US $800) for India-USA. Is that off peak and only on likes of AI? Does anyone know?

Excerpts from the article:
Air Sahara has been allowed to start a daily flight between Delhi and Chicago under a code-share agreement with United Airways. Under this agreement, Sahara can start Chicago operations from the winter of 2005, the official said.
Air Sahara plans to have a joint marketing initiative with United for the India-US flights, under which tickets on the Delhi-Chicago sector would be sold through a common network and revenues and costs shared between the two carriers. This will mark United's return to the Indian skies nearly three years after it flew out of the country.
