WASHINGTON – Tomorrow morning at 11:00 am EST, the National
Transportation Safety Board will open the public docket for the
Japan Airlines Boeing 787 lithium-ion battery fire investigation.
On January 7, 2013, at about 10:21 am EST, smoke was
discovered by cleaning personnel in the aft cabin of a Japan
Airlines Boeing 787-8, which was parked at a gate at Boston Logan
International Airport. Shortly afterward, a mechanic found smoke
and flames coming from the airplane's lithium-ion auxiliary power
unit battery located in the aft electronic equipment bay. Aircraft
Rescue and Firefighting personnel responded to the fire, which
resulted in one minor injury to a firefighter.
