Arab airline alliance plan

Arab airlines are talking about forming an alliance like One World or Star Alliance, reported Bloomberg. The alliance called Arabesk would include: Saudia, Egypt Air, Gulf Air, Middle East Airlines, Oman Air and Royal Jordanian. It would help to cut costs by rationalising route structures.

Arab airline pact set for take-off

Bahrain Tribune - 09/10/2005
Arabesk, an alliance of six of the Arab world's leading airlines, is expected to take off soon.

The airlines - Egypt Air, Gulf Air, Middle East Airlines, Oman Air, Royal Jordanian Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines - are now discussing the alliance with Sabre Airline Solutions and the Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO), sources said yesterday.

The new entity will be on the lines of One World, Star Alliance and Sky Team which together have 33 airlines under their wings.

"This will be the first airline alliance that coordinates the schedules of six close competitors," said the sources, adding that the goal of creating this pan-Arab alliance is to provide financial benefits that the carriers are not able to achieve individually.

"The real issue is that close competitors are not able to cooperate effectively because they end up wooing the same passengers," they said. "The upcoming alliance, when it takes final shape, will challenge this perception by ensuring that the cooperation occurs on schedules, while allowing free and open competition on pricing between the members for the pool of passengers."

They said this, it was hoped, would stimulate the growth of traffic in the region and improve the market share of each of the members.

Among other benefits, the sources said, the alliance will provide better separation of services, reduce duplication of capacity, linking networks and destinations, generating market demand through improved customer connectivity and maximise capacity through route sharing and rationalisation.
According to estimates, the combined network of the six carriers totals over 5,000 departures each week reaching from North America to the Far East, giving vast potential to the alliance.

Chief Executive of World Travel Service, Hisham Al Baradie, said: "If it goes through, it would greatly strengthen all those involved."

He said, however, that there needed to be a clear vision, a definite programme and their efforts should be synergised in such a way that all the players benefit, in addition to the regional players being strengthened."

He said these airlines should also cooperate and compete directly with larger carriers/alliances with a combined network, while still competing with each other for passengers based on a competitive pricing policy.

Aeroflot will Chabarowsker Airline übernehmen

Moskau.

A plan to save an airline
By Jean Christou
Can it be implemented in time?

A STRATEGIC plan designed to save Cyprus Airways (CY) £20 million in the next 12 months was handed over to the government yesterday by the airline’s board.

The plan, which includes proposals for redundancies, cost-cutting, outsourcing, revenue increases and changes in working practices within the airline must be submitted to the European Commission on November 2.

CY needs approval from the Commission to obtain a £60 million loan from which it will pay back a short-term £30 million the airline borrowed recently, while the remainder will go to putting the national carrier back on its feet following two years of heavy losses. To obtain the approval, it must prove it is still a viable concern.

Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou, who received the plan from CY chairman Lazaros Savvides, said the proposals were very important for the future of the company and was the last chance to save the airline.

“The government doesn’t want to see £30 million being poured into a black hole,” he said. “This money belongs to the public and must be used in the right way.”

Savvides said the plan, which has not been presented in depth to the unions, must be implemented as a whole. He said it was no use for the airline to implement either redundancies, or across-the board wage cuts, or cost-cutting in isolation.

“Unfortunately for the company to go forward and have a future all of the proposals must be implements concurrently,” he said. “It’s no use cutting staff or wages without changing the way the company works and that means in all departments.”

Savvides said the airline’s board would work with all of the unions to reach an agreement on the contents of the plan.

The airline has asked the unions already to agree in principle so that the plan can be rushed to the European Commission but CY’s largest union CYNIKA has asked for the figures.

CY said however the small print could be worked out with the unions between now and the end of the year so that the plan could be implemented from January 1, 2006.

Negotiations are due to begin with the unions later this week.

“The alone way for the company to survive is to find ways to cut its costs and increase its revenue,” said Thrasou. “This is the basis of the entire plan, savings, savings, savings.”

He said the plan would be given to the Finance Minister with whom it would be studied. He said the timetable was strict.

Savvides said however he was optimistic that a positive conclusion would be reached with the unions.

“The plan is extremely balanced and will satisfy also the very high expectations that the European Commission has for such plans,” he said, adding that radical and painful decisions would have to be taken.

CY vice-chairman Frixos Savvides said last month that the airline, which lost over £20 million in the first half of this year, did not have enough cash to pay the November and December wage bills.

He said if CY failed to reach an agreement with its unions within the next two months it would have no option but to close down.

Eight Arab airlines to launch alliance

13 October 2005

BEIRUT — Eight Arab carriers will launch the region’s first airline alliance in December to improve services and raise profits in an increasingly competitive industry, the Arab Air Carriers Organisation said yesterday.
“This is the first alliance of its kind among Arab carriers. We have a reached a deal which will be signed during a meeting in Cairo on December 17-18,” said Manal Diab, acting head of administration at the Beirut-based AACO. “It is good for the airlines to be part of such an alliance. This way they have a better negotiating stance when dealing with other international alliances or airport service providers for example.”
Arab carriers are facing stiff competition with international airlines and alliances such as One World or Star Alliance. The new alliance among the state-owned airlines, dubbed Arabesk, includes Egypt Air, Gulf Air, Middle East Airlines, Oman Air, Yemen Air, Tunis Air, Royal Jordanian Airlines, and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Emirates delays New York startup, boosts Asia service

Thursday October 13, 2005 Emirates postponed launch of its second daily A350-500 nonstop between Dubai and New York JFK from Nov. 7 to Nov. 16. The carrier cited the impact of the strike at Boeing, which caused a delivery delay that forced it to continue to use the aircraft on other services.
Separately, Emirates noted it is increasing its presence in five Asian markets. It added two weekly flights to Hong Kong on Oct. 1, bringing its weekly total to 14. At the end of October it will add three direct flights to Jakarta each week, returning to Dubai over Singapore. Jakarta already is served four times per week via Colombo and Singapore and three times per week via Kuala Lumpur. Singapore gets six more weekly services starting Oct. 30; the airline currently operates 18 weekly flights to Singapore, two direct daily flights and four via Colombo. Also from the end of October it will offer five weekly direct services to Kuala Lumpur, up from three per week currently. From early November it will add one more direct flight from Dubai to Bangkok, bringing the total to 19 per week.
Meanwhile, Emirates SkyCargo is increasing payload capacity to Shanghai by 50% by adding a fifth and sixth weekly frequency and upgrading the 747-200F to a dash 400F.

SAA to oppose rivals' bids for more flights
October 13, 2005

By Audrey d' Angelo Business Report 13.10.05

Cape Town - SAA, which has been fighting unsuccessfully for more air traffic rights to Nigeria and Ghana, would oppose attempts by Emirates, Qatar Airways and other airlines from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to obtain permission for more flights to this country, chief executive Khaya Ngqula said yesterday.

Yunus Carrim, the chairman of the parliamentary portfolio committee on public enterprises, said he had been approached by Emirates for support in its attempts to obtain more air traffic rights so that it could fly to Cape Town in addition to its two daily flights to Johannesburg. He had explained that he could not interfere in the matter.

Ngqula told Business Report that only 5 percent of the passengers brought here by Emirates and Qatar Airways originated from their home markets. Most of the other passengers had been lured away from SAA and other airlines offering direct flights by cheaper fares or by offers of free or low-cost stopovers.

This could result in the loss of some direct flights which might not be viable in the low season.

Emirates, which offers connecting flights to all five continents from its home airport in Dubai, has obtained the support of the Cape provincial parliament and the regional chamber of commerce and industry for its attempts to obtain more air traffic rights to start a non-stop service to Cape Town.

Qatar, which started with four flights a week to Cape Town via Johannesburg and has temporary permission to fly daily until January, hopes to be allowed to retain the daily service.

Two other UAE airlines, Gulf Air and Etihad Airways, which will start flying to Johannesburg in time for the peak holiday season, also hope to obtain permission for more flights.

Ngqula said Emirates had a large share of lucrative cargo business to and from South Africa, which enabled it to discount passenger fares. SAA was trying to obtain more cargo business.

SAA was unable to obtain all the flights it wanted to other countries. It had so far been limited to three flights a week to Accra in Ghana and Lagos in Nigeria - both markets in which it hoped to offer daily flights.

It had also failed to obtain the right to take passengers in Accra, where it made a refuelling stop en route to Washington.

It would, however, be able to do so from November, when it would be codesharing with US-based United Airlines on the leg from Accra to Washington

Iberia decided not to participate in the privatization of AeroMexico and Mexicana, citing unfavorable market conditions. According to AFX in Madrid, Iberia Chairman Fernando Conte previously expressed concern over the ability of the two airlines to compete with their current business structure against emerging low-cost carriers. He also was not satisfied that foreign investment would be kept to 25%. However, according to Reuters, Spain's Globalia, which owns Air Europa, is interested in bidding for the airlines.

Erst in letzter
erfolgreichsten Billigflieger Lateinamerikas geworden.
