KLM to use PrivatAir BBJ on flights to Houston
Switzerland-based elite travel specialist PrivatAir added another airline customer for its services tailored to long, thin business markets.Beginning Oct. 30, the company will operate a Boeing Business Jet on behalf of KLM between Amsterdam Schiphol and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport six times per week. The BBJ, which is based on the 737-700, will be equipped with 44 lie-flat business class seats in a 2-2 configuration.

Service will be provided on an ACMI basis, replacing KLM's existing thrice-weekly 767 services and complementing its continuing daily 747-400 service. Although total capacity will decline, business class capacity on the route will increase by 45%.

KLM said it is launching the new service in response to "the great demand for World Business Class seats on this route." The service will be operated in codeshare with Northwest Airlines. The aircraft will retain the PrivatAir livery but will bear the words "Operated on behalf of KLM" on its fuselage and in the cabin.

PrivatAir provides similar services on behalf of Lufthansa from Dusseldorf to Newark and Chicago and from Munich to Newark using BBJs and Airbus A319LRs. It operates from Zurich to Newark on behalf of Swiss International Air Lines.

Republic receives FAA certification

Republic Airlines, a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, received a Part 121 Airworthiness Certificate from FAA that will allow it to begin scheduled passenger operations of Embraer 170s for US Airways Express in September. Republic Airlines expects to operate up to 28 of the aircraft on behalf of that carrier, which is merging with America West. "Obviously we are pleased that we have completed the process," spokesperson Warren Wilkinson told ATWOnline. He noted that Republic Holdings flies 28 170s for United Express on the certificate of Shuttle America, another subsidiary, and also is the parent of Chautauqua Airlines. By next year, RAH expects to operate 72 170s, Wilkinson said. Through its three subsidiaries, it provides 840 daily flights to 82 cities in 32 states in feeder operations on behalf of American, Delta, United and US Airways.

Separately, Republic signed a four-year agreement with its flight attendants, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Wilkinson said the contract was ratified by 93% of the votes cast.

Dollar an. Dollar an Kosten entspräche.

China Approves Taiwan Carriers' Use of its Airspace

Agence France Presse reports that China Airlines and EVA Airways, along with their subsidiaries Mandarin Airlines and Uni Airways respectively, have secured mainland government approval to overfly Chinese airspace.

The airlines now will overfly mainland China on their flights to Europe and the Middle East, saving millions on fuel from previously having to fly around Chinese airspace.

Taiwan has had a ban on direct travel between the island and the mainland, including overflight of Chinese airspace, since 1949. But recently there have been moves to relax this and indirect flights have been operated during the busy Chinese New Year holiday period.

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, said Wednesday it is reducing capacity at its Cincinnati hub by 26 percent while boosting international service and making other changes in an effort to become more efficient.

Atlanta-based Delta, which is fighting to avoid a bankruptcy filing, also said it will accelerate the removal of certain aircraft types to simplify its fleet.

Among the changes announced Wednesday:

_Starting Dec. 1, Delta will make changes at its second-largest hub at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport to better match service to local passenger demand. Delta will reduce mainline and Delta Connection carrier capacity by 26 percent.

_Delta will replace service in nine markets currently served nonstop from Cincinnati by Delta Connection carriers ASA and Comair with connecting service through is main hub in Atlanta.

_From the Atlanta and Salt Lake City hubs, Delta is expanding service to regional business destinations with new nonstop flights to 20 destinations.

_Delta also said it will add more flights to Hawaii and new or expanded service to 41 international destinations.

_As for fleet simplification, Delta said it will speed the removal from service of its Boeing 767-200 aircraft type - the least efficient wide-body aircraft in its fleet. These aircraft are scheduled to be removed from service by Dec. 1, with the majority to be sold to ABX Air Inc.

Delta, racked by high fuel costs, has lost nearly $10 billion since January 2001.

Delta shrinking Cincinnati hub, selling 767-200s

Delta Air Lines will cut capacity at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport, its second-largest hub, by 26% effective Dec. 1 and will sell 11 767-200s to ABX Air.Additionally, it will drop nonstop service operated by Delta Connection carriers in nine Cincinnati markets in favor of connecting service via Atlanta. In a letter to staff, the company said the reductions will result in around 1,000 job eliminations at the hub among Delta and Comair staff.

The aim of the downsizing is "to better match service to local passenger demand and optimize the balance of local and connecting traffic," the carrier said yesterday, while the 767-200 "is the least efficient widebody" in its fleet. Delta expects to boost the share of local traffic carried at Cincinnati to nearly 50% in line with its Atlanta and Salt Lake City hubs. Sale of the 767-200s, which have an average age of 22 years, according to Airclaims, will leave the carrier with three, which it expects will be gone by year end. Last year it said it planned to eliminate up to four subfleets.

Some of the freed capacity will be redeployed to its other hubs, where Delta will add service to 20 destinations. It also is boosting service to a number of international destinations, particularly routes to Latin America and the Caribbean. Since January it has introduced or announced 21 new international routes and international ASMs represented 28% of mainline capacity in August.

New destinations to be served from Atlanta will include Managua (Dec. 15), Puerto Vallarta (Dec. 15), Antigua (Dec. 18), San Pedro Sula (March 1); Roatan, Honduras (March 4) and Dusseldorf (April 3). On Dec. 1 it also will increase by two the number of daily flights between Atlanta and Cancun and expand to daily its existing weekend-only service between Cincinnati and Montego Bay. Service to Latin America markets is subject to appropriate government operating approvals.

Separately, ABX Air said it will spend $190 million to acquire the 767s and convert them to freighters, a job it "anticipates" will be handled by Israel Aircraft Industries. It previously acquired a 767-200 from Delta in July.

LOT Polish Airlines ordered seven 787-8s and took options on two and "hold purchase rights" on five more. Boeing valued the firm aircraft at around $910 million at list prices. They will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000s and deliveries begin in 2008. The 787s will replace LOT's six 767-300s and two 767-200s. Airbus had offered the A350 in competition. LOT said the evaluation process was supported by Sabre Airline Solutions while the final results were scrutinized by Ernst &Young. The supervisory board's decision in favor of the Boeing product was unanimous. "The 787 fits perfectly with our cost reduction and profitability strategies," LOT President and Chief Executive Marek Grabarek said in a statement. Including LOT, 22 airlines have announced firm orders and commitments for 263 Dreamliners, Boeing said. LOT is the largest customer in Europe to order the jet. Italian leisure carrier Blue Panorama and the UK's First Choice also have ordered it.
