Allianz hin oder her.

Lan Chile expands number of flights to Brazil

Lan Chile was awarded through a bidding process 27 new weekly frequencies between Chile and Brazil, according to industry sources in Santiago. Another Chilean airline, Sky, was also granted seven weekly frequencies.

The Chilean flag carrier won eleven weekly frequencies to Brazil “without geographic limitations”, meaning flights can extend to other routes.

Another seven have the option to continue from Brazil to other destinations in the South American continent, while its cargo affiliate, Lan Cargo, managed nine weekly frequencies.

Last April Chile and Brazil civil aeronautics authorities signed an agreement which opened the door for the current expansion process.

For Brazil the agreement means an additional 35 weekly frequencies to Chile, although this still has to be implemented.

Lan is among the leading Latinamerican airlines, and most prosperous, with headquarters in Chile but has also expanded business to other countries such as Ecuador, Peru Dominican Republic and recently Argentina. In the coming 18 months it has plans to incorporate ten new aircrafts valued in 600 million US dollars.

Qatar Airways to Become First International Airline with Live In-Seat Television

Qatar Airways is set to become the first international airline to install live onboard satellite television as part of a $100 million agreement with Lufthansa Technik. The airline plans to introduce the new feature on its long-haul fleet of Airbus A330s by the end of the year.

Lufthansa Technik will install Rockwell Collins' Tailwind 560 product for onboard live satellite television on the airline's fleet of 15 A330s. Passengers will be able to watch live TV from selected networks. Engineers and technicians will equip the fleet with antennas and corresponding systems and integrate the TV function into Qatar Airways' existing inflight entertainment system.

Currently live seat-back television is in place at JetBlue, Frontier Airlines of Denver, and Calgary-based WestJet. Air Canada plans to begin equipping its fleet with live television beginning in the fall.

The $100 million agreement also includes engine maintenance and overhaul of the airline's Airbus A320 family of short-haul aircraft over the next 10 years. Lufthansa Technik's Engine Services in Hamburg will service the different IAE V2500 engine variants of Qatar Airways' Airbus A320 family aircraft under its total engine support contract.

A Pacific Merger that Wasn't

Australia's trade minister recently speculated that a Qantas and Singapore Airlines (SIA) could potentially merge, amid continued debate in the aftermath of Australia's decision to continue to bar SIA from access to the Australia-U.S. trans-Pacific market.

Qantas and SIA both said they are not interested in a merger. Period. End of discussion. So not really much of a story, was it?

Air Canada Pilots Say Boeing Vote Was Over 2001 Merger

In a statement issued yesterday, the leadership of the Air Canada's pilots union said that many of its pilots voted against ratification of an agreement on work terms for Boeing 777s and 787s because they are still bruised over seniority provisions from the 2001 merger between Air Canada and Canadian Airlines.

"The association notes that the proposed contract amendment failed to gain
support, in large part, due to the ongoing dissatisfaction of a number of ACPA
members over how the Air Canada and Canadian Airlines pilot seniority lists were merged after the two pilot groups were brought together in 2001." said the union in a statement.

The union had recommended voting for the agreement but 54 percent of the members voted against it, including a block that call themselves the "Original Air Canada" group who were pilots at Air Canada before the merger.

Air Canada says it will now look on the used aircraft for additional aircraft, but will still need to resolve what it will do about a long-term replacement for its fleet of 43 Boeing 767s.

U.S. airlines must reveal where aircraft were built

BLOOMBERG NEWS

U.S. airlines must tell passengers where planes were built, under a rule that becomes final today and was prompted by a U.S. lawmaker's concern that so many aircraft are being manufactured outside the country.

Carriers, including American Airlines and United Airlines, must place the information on the plastic cards in airplane seat backs that describe emergency exits.

The rule is the result of a provision that Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., who is chairman of the House aviation subcommittee, added to legislation enacted in December 2003.

"All of the airlines are probably already in compliance," Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Les Dorr said yesterday in Washington. The agency estimated it would cost carriers $522,000 to print stickers with the location where planes were "finally assembled" and place them on the placards in 6,559 aircraft.

Airbus has won more orders than The Boeing Co. in five of the past six years and delivered more planes the past two years. U.S. airlines also use planes made by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. and Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, which has its headquarters in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil.

The requirement is "irrelevant" because aircraft manufacturing is a global industry and planes contain parts from countries around the world, said Mary Anne Greczyn, a U.S. spokeswoman for Airbus.

The company's planes are "finally assembled" in France or Germany, she said.

:thbdwn:
"Be sure you are flying in an US-built aircraft!"

http://forum.fly-ra.com/viewtopic.php?t=58

SAA in talks with Airbus over A380

Tue, 28 Jun 2005

South African Airways (SAA) is reportedly in talks with Airbus over buying the world's biggest plane, the A380.

The European aircraft manufacturer confirmed it was in talks with the local airline, and believes it will be able to sell six or seven A380s to SAA over the next six or seven years, Business Day reported on Tuesday.

Airbus SA spokesperson told the daily that official negotiations had not started, but that an "information" session was underway.

Despite its poor financial shape, SAA is reportedly considering buying the aircraft, which will carry over 500 passengers and be more fuel efficient than other aircraft. It will also help SAA meet heavy demand on the Johannesburg to London route.

Business Day reported the use of the A380 could also solve the problem of not enough landing slots at London's busy Heathrow Airport.

Although it is too late for SAA to buy the aircraft ahead of the Soccer World Cup in 2010, it could lease the A380 in order to handle the expected influx of visitors, according to Business Report.

The Airports Company SA (Acsa) announced recently it would spend R400-million to modify its Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airports to be able to accommodate the aircraft.

The A380 has a price tag of about R2-billion. SAA recently decided to cancel 15 of the 42 other Airbus aircraft it ordered from Airbus.
