Air India Board clears acquisition of 50 aircraft
Mumbai, Nov 24 (UNI) After a gap of nearly 15 years, Air India will be acquiring 50 aircraft for its fleet expansion programme.

At a meeting here today, the national carrier's Board of Directors approved floating tenders for inviting offers for the acquisition of 50 aircraft, of which two-thirds will be on firm basis and one-third on option.

Air India will be acquiring three types of aircraft for its fleet -- the Medium Capacity Ultra Long Range aircraft (A340-500/B777-200LR), the Medium Capacity Long Range - 350 seater, in three-class configuration (A340-600/B777-300ER) and the 250 seater in two class configuration (A330-200/B7E7-8).

With this planned acquisition, Air India will increase its fleet size to 74 aircraft. It proposes to increase seat capacity by 12 per cent annually over this period.

Following today's decision by the Board, the airline will now invite offers from aircraft and engine manufacturers and subsequently undertake a techno-economic review of the offers received.

This fleet acquisition plan, which covers a period up to 2012-2013, provides for replacement of two B747-300 aircraft; 19 A310-300 aircraft (including 11 leased ones) and five leased Boeing 747-400s in Air-India's present fleet.

The AI Board also decided to process the acquisition of 18 aircraft of 737-800 W specification. The national carrier had earlier selected this aircraft for its Small Capacity Short Range operations, in the name of its subsidiary company, Air-India Charters Ltd (AICL), after updating the project report based on low cost, low fare operations.

These aircraft will on induction be used to replace the leased capacity to be deployed by Air India Express when it commences operations in April 2005.

HONG KONG EXPRESS TO OPERATE FOUR EMBRAER 170S

Embraer announced today that startup airline Hong Kong Express Airways Ltd (HKE) will operate four EMBRAER 170 aircraft configured with 76 seats. HKE will be the launch customer for the EMBRAER 170, not only in China but also in the whole of Asia.
Three aircraft are scheduled for delivery to HKE in the second half of 2005 and one in the first half of 2006. These aircraft will be leased from General Electric Capital Aviation Services (GECAS).

HKE Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tse said: “The aircraft will be used to provide multiple daily services between Hong Kong and secondary cities in mainland China. In conjunction with the extensive air services to over 140 cities worldwide through the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), HKE’s plan of operation will strengthen HKIA’s position of being the predominant gateway to mainland China by enhancing the connectivity for mainland China international travelers as well as the air service for local Hong Kong travelers. This is an investment of over US$ 100 million, which fully demonstrates our commitment to Hong Kong.”

The lease of the four EMBRAER 170 aircraft is just the first phase of HKE’s fleet plan. It is HKE’s intention to acquire two aircraft per year to cover 12-15 cities in mainland China in the next five years, subject to the regulatory approval and market conditions.

“Embraer is very proud and pleased that Hong Kong Express became our launch customer in Asia for the EMBRAER 170. By providing air services between Hong Kong and secondary cities in mainland China, it will no doubt promote the economic cooperation between the two areas. In addition, it will allow mainland travelers more choices and convenience to go for worldwide trips via Hong Kong,” said Guan Dongyuan, Managing Director of Embraer in China.

CASGC ANNOUNCES ITS DECISION TO ACQUIRE 23 AIRBUS A320 FAMILY AIRCRAFT
DECEMBER 06, 2004

China Aviation Supplies Import & Export Group Corporation (CASGC) has announced its decision to acquire 23 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The announcement was made in Beijing at a ceremony in the Great Hall of the People attended by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

“CASGC has enjoyed an excellent cooperative relationship with Airbus for many years. Through our joint efforts, Airbus can provide more modern and economic aviation products to Chinese airlines, while CASGC can offer high quality and value-added services to Chinese airlines,“ CASGC President Li Hai said.

“Airbus considers China as a very strategic and important market,” said Gustav Humbert, Airbus Chief Operating Officer.

The Airbus A320 Family is the world's fastest selling single-aisle product range, made up of the A318, A319, A320 and A321. A320 Family aircraft are chosen by more than 160 customers and operators around the world, including many in Asia, with a market share of orders of around 60 per cent for the year 2004 so far. Firm orders for the Airbus A320 Family stand at more than 3,200 aircraft in total, of which some 2,300 have been delivered to date.

The A320 Family is the acknowledged technological leader in its category, with advanced features such as fuel-saving wingtip fences, weight-saving composites, and the reliability that comes from its modern design and ease of maintenance. It also consistently leads in independent passenger and operator surveys.

Airbus’ business in China has been steadily expanding since it first entered the country in 1985. The Airbus fleet in service in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao has grown to more than 260 today from just 29 in 1995. A training and support centre, which represents a US$80 million investment by Airbus, is fully operational in Beijing. Five Chinese companies are involved in producing parts for Airbus aircraft.

"Under this contract, the first Airbus A321 will be delivered in 2006," the company said in a press release.

The signing came two months after a visit to Vietnam by French President Jacques Chirac during which Airbus, which is headquartered in southwestern France, signed a memorandum of agreement with Vietnam Airlines.

Last July the airline took delivery of the first of five A321-200s ordered in 2002 during a visit to Paris by the Vietnamese president.

The A321, which is used on short- and medium-haul routes, seats around 185 passengers and has a range of up to 5,550 kilometers (3,470 miles)

The Vietnamese flag carrier is also in talks with Boeing to buy four of its next-generation 7E7 Dreamliners that are due to enter service in 2008.

DECEMBER 21, 2004

Air Europa of Spain is the first airline to commit to the A350-800, Airbus’ new 245-seater aircraft only on offer since 10th December, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding for 10 aircraft and 2 further options. This decision comes after a rigorous evaluation of the aircraft’s performance and efficiency with the aircraft due to be delivered between 2010 and 2012. Air Europa has selected GEnx engines from GE Aircraft Engines for the aircraft and will use a configuration of 300 to 330 seats. As part of Air Europa’s plans to renew and expand its current fleet, it has signed a contract to receive one A340-200 leased from Airbus in 2005 and intends to lease two new A330-200s in the spring of 2006.

The A350 is offered as a sister-ship to the A330 and completes the Airbus wide-body Family with two models, the A350-800 and the A350-900, allowing Airbus to satisfy all airlines’ demand in the 245 to 285 seats long range sector. Complementing the existing A330 and A340 product line, the A350-800/900 offers the same external dimensions with a 245 and 285 seat capacity respectively, an increased range up to 8,600 nm (15,900 km), new generation engines, providing some 12 percent lower fuel consumption per trip, new wings and a lighter structure employing an increased amount of composite material. The same Type Rating for pilots will allow Air Europa to optimise efficiency with the A340-200 and the A330-200. The application of the latest state of the art technology in the cabin will provide for best passenger and crew comfort.

“This commitment will without doubt be a key element in the complete renewal of the Air Europa wide-body fleet, making it one of the most modern fleet on the continent and allowing our company to continue with its growth strategy,” stated Juan Jose Hidalgo, Executive President of the Globalia Group and parent company of Air Europa.

Noël Forgeard, Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus expressed the company’s pleasure at this announcement. “Only days after the approval from our shareholders to offer this aircraft on the market, Airbus is already in the position to announce its first customer for the A350, demonstrating that the A350 indeed correspond to market needs. Air Europa is a fast growing airline in a market that is very important and we are proud of their confidence. We are sure it will be followed soon by more airlines showing their interest in this latest Airbus product.”
