Doha
Qatar Airways said its Bangkok route frequency would increase to double daily to meet growing demand from both business and leisure travellers.
Beginning June 25, the airline will offer passengers a wider choice of scheduled flights with morning and evening departures between Doha and Bangkok, the capitals of the Qatar and Thailand respectively.
The capacity hike from the current 10 services a week is taking place during one of the busiest travel periods to and from Asia.
And with Doha hosting the 15th Asian Games at the end of the year, Qatar Airways’ increased presence in the Thai market will help promote the region’s biggest sporting event, of which the airline is official partner.
Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker said the additional flights reinforced the airline’s commitment to operate routes with increased frequency, particularly during the peak summer travel months.

“We are delighted to be able to provide our passengers with greater choice of flight options to and from Bangkok,” he said.
“With morning and evening departures every day, we are offering passengers with greater flexibility in their travel plans.
“Our flights will also offer excellent connections to and from Europe, the GCC markets and rest of the Middle East over our hub in Doha.”
Addressing a press conference in Bangkok today, Qatar Airways senior manager Commercial Operations Far East and Australasia, Marwan Koleilat, said: “The Asia Pacific region is one of Qatar Airways’ strongest growth areas and we are eyeing new opportunities in this very exciting part of the world.
“Bangkok is one of 12 destinations we serve in the Far East – that represents more than 15 per cent of our total international network.
“Thailand, in particular, is strategically well located within the region as a hub for business from neighbouring countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
“As the international gateway for many cities in the south-east region, we look at Bangkok as a pivotal point to feed traffic, which we hope to develop further with even more flights over the months and years to come.
“Our Bangkok flights already appeal to a large expatriate community, as well as Thais travelling on leisure to Europe, Africa and many destinations across the Middle East.”
The expansion in Thailand comes just weeks after Qatar Airways opened a second ticketing office in Bangkok to facilitate the needs of travellers.
Added Koleilat: “In addition to increasing our flights to the Thai market, our new branch office in the downtown area of Bangkok will greatly help facilitate passengers’ needs.
“We are currently one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, averaging almost 40 percent growth year on year which is a fantastic figure that many airlines watch with envy.”
Qatar Airways operates the modern Airbus A330-200 in a two-class configuration on the Bangkok route. The Business cabin has up to 24 seats that recline 160 degrees, while Economy features a maximum 259 seats.
The A330s feature the airline’s award-winning Audio Video On Demand interactive entertainment system, allowing passengers in both classes to choose from more than 40 international movies, as well as short programmes to view on their individual TV screens.
Passengers can also listen to an extensive list of 250 CDs and 16 audio channels. In addition, there is a choice of 12 video games to play through the interactive TV screens.
Qatar Airways operates a modern fleet of 47 all-Airbus aircraft to 70 destinations from its hub in Doha. Together with its codeshare partners, Qatar Airways serves more than 90 cities worldwide.
The airline’s fleet will more than double in size by 2015 to 110 aircraft. Qatar Airways plans to acquire up to 80 new aircraft in orders worth $16 billion.
Qatar Airways is one of only four airlines in the world with a Five Star ranking for service and excellence awarded by Skytrax, the independent aviation industry monitoring agency.
Skytrax has also increased Qatar Airways’ global ranking to sixth best airline in the world this year, and named the carrier’s cabin crew as Best in the Middle East for the fourth year running in 2006 and second best in the world.
During the 2004/2005 financial year, Qatar Airways carried 4.6 million passengers, up 35 per cent on the previous 12-month period.
Passenger numbers rose sharply in the 2005/2006 financial period to 6.3 million and are projected to increase to 8 million in the current financial year.
Qatar Airways is a launch customer of the twin-deck Airbus A380 ‘super jumbos’ with four aircraft on order and scheduled for delivery from 2009 to coincide with the opening of the New Doha International Airport.

Neuer Flug: Stuttgart – Moskau dreimal pro Woche

Moskau.

Air China yesterday offered HK$3.23 billion ($416 million) to increase its stake in Cathay Pacific Airways to 17.5% as part of a transaction that will privatize China National Aviation Co., which controls Air Macau and catering, maintenance and ground handling services. CNAC agreed to sell its stake in Dragonair last week as part of the deal in which Cathay is taking over its fellow Hong Kong airline. "For Air China, the privatization will bring the operating units of CNAC under our direct control and simplify our shareholding in Cathay Pacific," Air China Chairman Li Jiaxiang said in a statement, according to Bloomberg News. "For CNAC shareholders this privatization reflects an excellent return on their investment." Air China plans to use bank loans to fund the CNAC privatization.

Northwest Airlines, the fourth largest airline in the US, is reported to be looking at launching a number of routes from the US to both Dublin and Shannon.

The move will come as a blow to Aer Lingus' expansion plans in the transatlantic market, according to the Irish Independent.

While consumers will welcome the extra competition, Aer Lingus will not be so happy as it derives much of its revenue from transatlantic routes.

The Irish airline has pinned much of its expansion plans on the market and is currently awaiting the completion of the Open Skies agreement to launch new routes.

The move by the US airline, which enjoys Chapter 11 protection from bankruptcy, comes at a bad time for Aer Lingus as it faces increased competition from Ryanair on the majority of its short-haul routes and awaits government clearance to float on the stock exchange.

As well as being the fourth largest carrier in the US, Northwest lays claim to being the fifth largest carrier in the world.

Northwest already has hubs at Amsterdam, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/St Paul and Tokyo, but continues to rack up huge losses.

Last month it reported a USD1.1bn loss for Q1, 2006, up from USD529m in the same period last year. The Minneapolis-based airline is looking to Europe to offset domestic losses.

British Airways is to step up its service between Bermuda and London Heathrow to a five-days a week schedule this winter. The airline has announced a 25 percent increase in the number of seats available on the route, which comes in the wake of its summer service to the island increasing to a daily frequency in March.

Robin Hayes, BA executive vice president for the Americas, said: 'This increased winter schedule, which is a commitment of more than 2200 seats a week between Bermuda and London, underscores the importance of the route for British Airways.

Malaysia Airlines said Wednesday it has agreed to sell its office headquarters for 130 million ringgit (US$36 million; euro29 million) to raise cash and bolster the loss-stricken carrier's finances.
The 35-story building, known as Bangunan MAS, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's largest city, will be sold to state-owned fund management firm Permodalan Nasional Bhd., Malaysia Airline System Bhd. said in a statement to the stock exchange.
The net book value of the airline and ticketing business headquarters was 81.2 million ringgit (US$23 million; euro18 million) at the end of December 2005, the statement said.
On completion of the sale, Malaysia Airlines said it expects to realize a gain of 46 million ringgit (US$12.8 million; euro10.2 million). The carrier has said it needs some 4 billion ringgit (US$1.1 billion; euro875 million) cash to restructure and return the company to profitability.
The airline reported a loss of 1.3 billion ringgit (US$362 million; euro288 million) for its financial year ended December 2005 and wants to turn around in 2007 with a projected 50 million ringgit (US$14 million; euro11 million) net profit.

Korean Air to buy 10 more cargo planes

SEOUL: Korean Air Co plans to add about 10 cargo planes from 2010 to 2015 to meet rising global demand, which it projects will grow by 6.5% a year.
Korean Air, which operates 24 cargo planes, was ranked the world's top commercial air-cargo carrier by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for the second consecutive year. It recorded about eight billion freight tonne-kilometres in 2005.
“We plan to purchase about two new airplanes every year from 2010 to 2015, and reach a total of about 40 cargo planes,” Ken Choi, president of Korean Air's cargo business told Reuters in Seoul yesterday.
Global air-cargo demand was expected to maintain a growth of 6.5% a year for a while, with China's demand rising about 15% annually, Choi said. The company, which vies in the cargo business with Singapore Airlines and Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa, is set to convert eight B747-400 passenger aircraft into cargo planes by 2009 before it starts buying new planes. – Reuters
