Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations last month helped Hong Kong’s airport achieve a 28.6% year-on-year increase in passenger throughput, although cargo traffic was down.
Hong Kong International Airport says throughput rose 28.6% to 3.1 million passengers from 2.41 million. “Heavy overseas travel during the Lunar New Year holidays boosted February’s passenger throughput,” says the airport.
Cargo throughput was down 3.1% year-on-year, to 216,000t from 222,918t. Cargo throughput generally increases in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year period but demand then slows during the festive period whereas passenger traffic increases.

Beijing airport passenger traffic up 18% in February
Leithen Francis, Singapore (15Mar05, 03:56 GMT, 164 words)
Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) serving the Chinese capital experienced strong passenger traffic growth in February but cargo throughput was down year-on-year.
Total passenger numbers rose 17.7%, to 2.6 million from 2.2 million, BCIA says in a statement. Domestic passenger throughput increased 18.7% to 2.1 million while international passenger numbers were up 9.5% to 452,000.
Passenger throughput from Hong Kong and Macau, which is treated by BCIA as a separate category, rose 35% year-on-year to 126,000.
While more people passed through the airport, cargo traffic in February was down. Total throughput dropped 9.2% year-on-year, to 41,997t from 46,237t, says BCIA.
Domestic throughput dropped 10.2% to 28,572t, international throughput fell 0.5% to 11,184t, and throughput from Hong Kong and Macau was down 29.3% to 2,241t.
The strong growth in passenger traffic but reduced cargo throughput was expected as the Chinese New Year holidays fell in February this year but in January last year. Passenger demand generally rises over the holiday period while freight demand falls.
