Fusion von ind. Airlines scheitert

Losses on international operations hit Jet Airways hard

Tuesday August 1, 2006 Heavy losses on its startup international operations dragged Jet Airways to a INR450 million ($9.7 million) loss in the first fiscal quarter ended June 30 from a INR953 million profit in the year-ago period. And the carrier issued a warning on the domestic front as well, saying that it has concern for the industry "in view of irrational pricing by airlines simply seeking to gain market share."
Jet earned INR118 million on its domestic services and lost INR713 million on flights to London Heathrow, Kathmandu, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, most of which launched around the same time last year. It said the four Asian routes were profitable, but the operation as a whole was a loser on seasonal issues and significantly increased capacity by competitors. It said it will address the problem "through a combination of passenger and cargo sales initiatives and network partnerships with other established airlines."
Revenues rose 25% to INR16.8 billion. The carrier flew 2.94 billion RPKs during the quarter, an increase of 39%, against a 44% rise in capacity to 4.04 billion ASKs. Load factor dropped 2.3 points to 72.9%, but its domestic load factor of 75% "remains above the industry average." Still, Jet said, "We are witnessing an unprecedented increase in domestic capacity, even as all airlines contend with declining yields, higher input costs and infrastructure constraints." It estimated that India's first-quarter domestic capacity rose 48% year-over-year. Domestic yield was relatively high compared to its competitors but still fell 9%, the airline said. It made up some of the difference with a May 1 fuel surcharge worth INR444 million. An additional INR200 surcharge was put in place on July 7.
Jet said the near-term outlook remains "difficult" as it enters its "traditionally weak" quarter. It is looking to manage yields more effectively and increase cargo revenues while containing costs.

Boeing said Indian discount airline SpiceJet placed an order for 10 737s planes, valued at over $700 million at list prices.Boeing said SpiceJet converted its options for five 737-800 planes and five longer ranger 737-900ER models. The delivery is scheduled to begin in late 2007, Boeing said in statement.
The options exercised are part of a February 2005 SpiceJet order.

The airline plans to extend its operations to North America, Europe, Africa and Asia in the next couple of years with the induction of wide-bodied aircraft into its fleet.

Jet, sources said, also has several other international destinations on its radar, which include South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Rome, Zurich, Munich and Frankfurt.

:thbdwn:

Jet Airways Ltd., India's biggest domestic airline, said it will expand its international operations with new flights to Bangkok in late January and flights to the United States late this year.

Jet Airways said on Tuesday it plans to launch a regular U.S. service in August, flying to Newark, New Jersey, and to San Francisco via Shanghai in October, executives said.

The airline will use eight new Boeing 777s and five Airbus 330s, already ordered, on its international routes this year on top of six Boeing 737s for its Indian domestic service, chairman Naresh Goyal told reporters.

"Our international operations will grow to account for about 50 percent of our total revenues in a few years," Goyal said, announcing Jet Airways' 14 weekly flights between Bangkok, Delhi and Kolkata.

quote

That is why I am proud to be able to announce today a great moment for both Jet Airways and Brussels Airport. As of today, Brussels is the European hub for Jet Airways. With this move, Brussels will become the gateway between the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. As of today, Jet Airways is our connection to Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, on the one hand, and New York, Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles on the other. Via India, we also have a platform for other destinations, such as Singapore, Bangkok and, in the longer run, Shanghai and Hong Kong. For its part, Brussels Airlines is the connection to a multitude of destinations in Europe and Africa. In short, with today's cooperative venture the world is linked via Brussels.

More specifically, as of August there will be four return Mumbai-Brussels-New York and Delhi-Brussels-Toronto flights per day. Starting in 2008, that will rise to six flights. The ultimate goal is ten flights per day. That means 3,200 passengers per day. Or one million extra passengers per year for Zaventem.

Gerüchten zufolge (z.B. hier) könnte Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, z. Zt.

:dead:

Mich schauderts...
